The Future of Wailua Beach

I heard some disturbing news today. I heard that Mayor Carvalho has decided to move forward with the plan to construct the bike/pedestrian path along the Wailua Beach. This is disturbing because Wailua Beach is a sacred Hawaiian burial ground. This is not a disputed fact. This is common knowledge. It seems quite unreasonable to move forward. I am anxious to hear his reasons for taking this course.

The route through Wailua Beach is simply disrespectful. Many people may not see the cultural significance of this issue, but I believe that the majority of Kauai residents do. Kauai is different. We are unique. I could go on and on about how we differ from the rest of the Hawaiian Islands, but I won't. If you don't know that by now, something is definitely wrong.

Being different is not a bad thing. We have survived many disasters because we are different. We have maintained a somewhat traditional lifestyle because we are different. We continue to enjoy many cultural traditions because we are different. For this, we should be thankful. For this, we should be grateful. For this, we should display the ultimate show of respect to the host culture. We owe this to the ancestors of this very unique place.

Many native Hawaiians have spoken out. Many non-Hawaiians have spoken out. Our leaders have not listened. For those that continue the push to desecrate the Hawaiian burial grounds at Wailua Beach, shame on you. We are only temporary visitors of this sacred place called Kauai. We are only passing by. While we are here, we must honor the host culture. We must respect the past and the present. We must not allow our personal agendas to get in the way of this wonderful culture. The Hawaiian culture is so very special. Please honor them. Please do not disturb those that have left us. Building a recreational path over known, sacred burial grounds is unacceptable. It is not pono. It is disrespectful. It is NOT the Kauai way.

  1. Last week was the landfill in Kalaheo. This week the bike path across Wailua Beach. What I thought was a guarantee of 10 years of Mayor Carvalho, maybe not.

  3. Looking at Wailua beach after the rains, and waves, how can they say they still want to build it there? Hardly any beach left. The path that will connect the Coconuts resorts and Coco Palms resorts... yes, necessary for the tourists, and like Ke'e Beach, once the developments are finished, the path will be a tourist path, linking resorts to the shops,
with so many tourists, locals tend to stay away.
The mayor had all his dept heads, his team lined up, he said for us to ask them questions, but if that was the purpose, why didn't he let the opponents know that he would have folks there for us to ask questions of in advance, no they were there like henchmen .
The Mayor is a big disappointment, sticking to the same old, same old story.
The seawall at Ponokai won't be the last one the taxpayers get stuck with to protect the bike path.

  4. I'm sure this decision will bring on more lawsuits for the County of Kauai.

  5. We agree with Anonymous #4...who is the WE, Mayor Carvalho is talking about. So far, we (my ohana and friends are not in agreement in any of his decision making for Kauai). Yet, he continues to refer to "Together WE can"..He continues to campaign throughout his administration on his TV show. When does he work for us? Recently, his campaigning tries to convince the "Kanaka Maole's" he cares about the people, the culture and the aina...AS MY TUTU WOULD SAY - mAYOR cARVALHO ONLY waha...shame, shame, shame..

  6. ALoha, Mel. I was a participant in that event. More on that on my blog later. As far as the dump meeting goes, I will be writing an article on alternatives and my ideas tomorrow. I have something new for you to sink your teeth into.

I have already contacted Nalani Brun about this. Seems there is a huge group coming here, with a "Guru", who is going to do ceremonies on all our sacred Wailua Heiau!
    Oh h-e-double L NO he won't!!

We could use some of your great investigative skills with this one!! I saw the ad by accident, dove into it a little deeper, and discovered this just by chance!!

I will be writing an article on my blog all about it tomorrow.

Thanks for keeping up the good work. I liked your comments at the meeting.

I felt like Eva Perone at one point, but that's another story!! (haha).

By the way-welcome back into the arena!!
p.s. No I'm not running for anything! Spread the word about my blog please!
